Top 5 hangover cures
[ENGLISH + ESPAÑOL]
We’ve all been there, at least once. We drink a little too much and the next day we feel horrible; headache, nausea, bad stomach, etc. Here in Guadalajara we have come up with our very own hangover cures and remedies to make us feel better – and they truly help. And the best thing is you can find them on nearly every street corner.
1. Torta ahogada
This is a delicious sourdough sandwich unique to our region, stuffed with mashed beans and shredded pork and then completely submerged in a tomato sauce that’s traditionally made with the very spicy chile de arbol and topped with white onion pickled in lime juice. Tortas ahogadas (or drowned sandwiches) received their name as you’re supposed to dip them in the tomato sauce until no more air bubbles come to the surface. The most famous tortas ahogadas can be found at “Tortas Tono“, and there are several of these around Guadalajara.
2. Tacos de barbacoa
I guess the direct translation of this would be ‘barbecue tacos’, but they have nothing to do with the BBQ sauce familiar to those in the west. This is another traditional dish from Guadalajara, Jalisco. Street vendors selling barbacoa can be found all over the city, and you can get the soft shell version or the deep-fried version with lime onion and a spicy smoky salsa… just thinking about these tacos is making my mouth water. The filling is either beef or goat cooked with a salsa made up of several kinds of chilies. I recommend going to ‘Tacos Juan’ or ‘Omar Carlos’. You won’t regret it!
Tacos Juan: José Clemente Orozco 461 (Manuel acuña), Guadalajara, Jalisco. Omar Carlos: Av. Patria 2010, El Colli Urbano, 45070 Zapopan, Jalisco.
3. Michelada
Pair this drink with any dish and it is the best hangover cure. We are talking about beer mixed in with spicy sauce, lime and soy sauce. Recipes vary from place to place and everyone prides themselves on having the best one. All in all, it’s the same basic idea, and the first sip is enough to bring you back to life. You’ll find micheladas on the menu pretty much everywhere.
4. Aguachile
Even though it originated in Northern Mexico and is therefore not a traditional Guadalajara dish, we Tapatios (people from Guadalajara) are huge fans of aguachile when it comes to hangovers. Raw prawns are left to cook in just lime juice and serrano chilli. Once ready, cucumber, purple onion and avocado are added. Delicious. I recommend trying aguachile in small establishments rather than in big restaurants, as sometimes simplicity tastes so much better.
And now for a hangover cure that’s not so common, but I think still works…
5. Waffles
Now here’s where everything changes. All of the dishes above are both savoury and very spicy, but the truth is that we Mexicans have a very sweet tooth as well. This Belgian delicacy came to Mexico to stay, so if you are in Guadalajara, feeling a bit hungover and needing a sugar fix, the best waffles can be found in Mercado Juarez in a place called “La Antigua”. They serve sweet and savoury waffles, along with lollies and other sweet stuff that will surely satisfy your craving.
La Antigua Waffles: Calle Prisciliano Sanchez 1005 | Mercado Juárez, Guadalajara.
So now you know what to do to ease that hangover next time you find yourself in Guadalajara, Mexico, having consumed way too much tequila.

Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this website.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and visual appearance.
I must say that you’ve done a amazing job with
this. Also, the blog loads super quick for me on Internet explorer.
Exceptional Blog!
