Once a month a corner of the very scenic Sydney suburb of Kirribilli, perched just north of the Harbour Bridge, is overtaken by sartorially-minded buyers and sellers. I love the Kirribilli Fashion Markets. People with great clothes come here to…

One of the best things about living in the Surry Hills/ Redfern area of Sydney is the fact that my entire life is conducted, in an entirely fulfilling way, within about a 2 km radius. I can literally go for…
Many people who live in Sydney have come from near and far, lured by the lifestyle, the weather, the beaches, job opportunities, or an Australian partner. Others have no choice but to leave their home countries for reasons we can’t possibly…
I thank my lucky stars that I was born into a large family. Count seven children on my mother’s side and six on my father’s – that’s a whole lotta uncles and aunties. Throw their offspring and their offspring’s offspring…
Anything preceded by the word ‘live’ usually gets my attention. I’m talking music, comedy, inspirational people, even TV. While seeing a favourite artist in the flesh can certainly mean the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, I’m more attracted to the…
Warm sand beneath your feet, ice cold waters as far as you can see, and a blazing sun in the distance. These are the things that make me feel at home. Sand, sun and sea are the three things that…
Sydney’s buildings and architecture tell its story, its fascinating history. Elaborate and decorative art deco inspired pubs sit alongside federation era houses (early 1900s) and 1980s brick apartment blocks. When I first moved to Sydney, I was immediately taken by…
For anyone who knows me personally, it will come as no surprise that one of my favourite things to do is eat. I am a complete and utterly obsessed foodie. And I can honestly say that growing up in Australia,…
Ask a Sydneysider what they’ll be doing for New Year’s Eve and the word ‘fireworks’ will usually form part of the answer. Fireworks remind me of growing up in New Zealand, and the annual Guy Fawkes festival. As unbelievable as…
If you’re planning a trip to Sydney you’re probably looking forward to the sun and sea. Both are great fun, but what might not be as obvious to non-locals is that Sydneysiders are lucky to be surrounded by a wide…
Wednesday October 30, 2013 was a beautiful day to fly away. It was the day I boarded my flight from Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport on route to Dhaka, Bangladesh on my very first solo trip. To drift among the clouds…
Afiyat Mustaq was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. Her parents are from Bangladesh, and she therefore also has strong cultural ties with Bangladesh and makes frequent visits.
My favourite time of the year is…..Spring going on Summer. Australia is known for its great weather and relaxing beaches, so there’s no better time to see Australia at its finest than Spring and Summer. My favourite local phrase is……’G’Day Maaaaate’.. Although I don’t personally use this phrase, it’s one that always reminds me of the laid back Aussie culture. My favourite words to live by are……“whatever you do, hold onto hope. The tiniest thread will twist into an unbreakable cord. Let hope anchor you in the possibility that this is NOT the end of your story; that change will bring you to peaceful shores.” What I love most about my home (country) is…..the people. I have had the opportunity to travel around quite a bit and this has made me realise that the Australian people, the locals in my home country, truly have the kindest hearts. We have a diverse multicultural culture that allows individuals to live side by side in harmony, which is priceless.
