Terror in Tlalpujahua

I am a Mexican filmmaker, and one of my favourite genres is horror. I love well-crafted horror and gore films – not just because of the blood and guts, but because of the creativity. The most impressive and respectable films in this genre are all about the hands-on craft that is involved in creating the visual effects and bringing these films to life. Some of Mexican’s most renowned filmmakers, like Guillermo del Toro (Cronos) for example, mastered their craft and made their mark experimenting in this genre.

My friends and I in Guadalajara spent our late teens getting together in each other’s houses with beers and pizza, watching as many gore and horror films as we could get our hands on. Low or high budget, it didn’t matter. We even baptised sunday “pizza-gore” day, or “domin-gore” (Sunday in Spanish is Domingo).

This explains why, for the last two years, I’ve made a pilgrimage to Feratum, the International Film Festival for Fantasy, Terror and Sci-Fi held in Tlalpujahua.

Tlalpujahua is a magical town in Michoacan, Mexico, with a past characterised by “terror”. In the old days it was a mining town, and in 1937 a major catastrophe occurred and as a consequence most of the town was buried underground. Funnily enough, just a tower of the chapel “nuestra señora del carmen” remained above ground, and now it’s a popular tourist attraction.

However, I’m not here to talk to you about the history of Tlalpujahua. Ill leave that for you to discover. The reason why I’m telling you this is that thanks to this disaster, and its terrifying past, the town now hosts one of the most important horror film festivals in Mexico.

At the beginning of October, horror films, special effects, monster marches, and other spine-chilling stuff takes over in the streets of Tlalpujahua.

This year I was there as part of the Feratum film festival production team, so unfortunately I can’t tell you much about the films because I didn’t have the chance to see any. What I can tell you about is the amazing guests in attendance. “El hijo del Santo” (a famous Lucha libre wrestler who is almost like a Mexican superhero) was there, as was Nigerian ambassador Khiri James Gana, Gary Pullin (A Canadian illustrator), Rodrigo Gudiño ( Canadian film director of Rue Morgue) and Ze do Caixao ( Brazilian director). All of these people are of great cult-like importance to the genre, and their participation means that next year we will attract even more great guests.

For me, this festival in Tlalpujahua is no ordinary festival. When you arrive, whether you are part of a production team or not, you will feel at home, as there is a real intimacy between the guests and the general public. There’s also nothing like the town itself, a magical place in Mexico with its own unique atmosphere, stories and films.
