Michoacan riots

[ENGLISH + ESPAÑOL]

Today, Mexico is enveloped in a wave of violence not seen since the Mexican Revolution (1910). Murders, kidnappings, decapitations and extortion have become everyday occurrences in many townships all across the country. The corrupt government and organized crime have led the nation down the darkest and most tragic path in the history of a Mexico that today feels more helpless than ever.

In December 2006, the president at the time, Felipe Calderon, declared in a national broadcast that he would wage a “war against drug trafficking”.  According to some experts, this was a strategy to legitimise his arrival to the presidency given that he was accused of electoral fraud in July of the same year.

Michoacan was the place where the federal government’s operations to combat organized crime and the cartels commenced, as the Michoacan “Family” was the strongest.

It has been 7 years of war now, and the exit door that will take us to that longed-for social stability seems further and further away. Our country has been kidnapped by the “big capitalists”, the inexhaustible corruption and the evilness of the Mexican politician.

There are townships in Mexican territory that have literally been left without public security because police officers quit, die or disappear, while the government remains without a solution to the grave social instability in the state of Michoacan.  As a consequence of the inability of the Mexican state to offer security, combined with ongoing harassment by criminal groups in the area, “Tierra Caliente” (Burning Soil or Burning Land) of Michoacan has seen the emergence of self-defence groups formed by men and women, young and old, who have taken up arms, tired of the lack of intervention by the federal and state authorities. These self-defence groups have organised to defend their people against abusive drug trafficking.

The Failed State is a reality in Michoacan. The power of organized crime far exceeds the power of the Mexican government, and has for a long time now. The government officially insists on following the same strategy it has always used to fight crime, while in reality the problem is way over its head.

The country is burning and chaos is everywhere.

MEET THE LOCAL: MANUEL TENEDOR
