Mexico Brewing

I’ve heard people say that Mexico is fast becoming a craft beer destination. In my opinion, this assertion is not far from reality.

My girlfriend Montse and I love exploring Guadalajara and discovering new bars and restaurants. What we’re really looking for, though, is good craft beer. I’ll tell you about a few of our favourite bars and breweries.

Firstly, there’s “Cerveza Minerva” or Minerva Beer. You could call this the commercial craft or artisan beer of Jalisco. The brewers have recently opened their own workshop/bar called “Taller de Cerveza Minerva”, or “Minerva Beer Workshop”, on #1905-A Lopez Cotilla St. in the Americana neighbourhood. Not only can you order all of their regular beers, you also have access to limited edition beers that are developed and brewed on site. They also offer workshops for brewing your own beer.

Then there’s another favourite, a pioneering craft brewery in Guadalajara called “Der Krug Brauhaus”. Here, German beers are brewed on site. The atmosphere of this bar is much calmer than Taller de Cerveza Minerva, as it’s not in ‘Zona Rosa’, the heaving strip of trendy restaurants and bars in Chapultapec. You’ll find Der Krug Brauhaus on #15 Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra St.  If you do make it here, bear in mind that it closes early (midnight), and it’s a little pricey compared to other bars.

We recently ventured into a place we’d heard about that holds brewing workshops called “Cerveceria la Blanca” on #127 Lope de Vega.  The atmosphere is relaxed, and the service outstanding. Our waiter explained the concept behind their beer and its ingredients. The beer is not only sold on tap – it’s also sold in bottles, so you can take some home. Unfortunately, we didn’t see the workshop, or the beer maker at work. If this is what you’re after, make sure you get there at midday.

Friends, when you come to Guadalajara don’t forget to visit these establishments (if, of course, you like craft beer) The are so many places like this to discover, as more and more bars move away from stocking products from other parts of the world, and towards brewing their own beer and mastering their own recipes.
