Broulee Island: An escape from urban life

A few months ago I visited a small town called Broulee on the south coast of New South Wales.

To celebrate my niece’s 2nd birthday, my family and I took a few days off from our daily routines and booked a holiday house by the beach, to spend some quality family time together and unwind with a well deserved break.

Broulee is situated 300 kilometres from Sydney – approximately a 4-hour drive. It’s a beautiful drive too, with plenty of opportunities to stop and explore small towns along the way.

Sunbaking on the picturesque beaches, browsing local markets and drinking coffee at cute local cafes… what more do you need during an escape from urban life?

Nothing right? Well then, there’s a bonus at Broulee!

A key attraction of Broulee is the Broulee Island Natural Reserve. Located adjacent to the town of Broulee, it is a 43-hectare nature reserve wonderfully maintained by the New South Wales Department of Environment and Climate Change.

Just before sunset on our first day in Broulee, I along with my sisters embarked on the 4 kilometre Broulee Island Walk, which begins south of the main beach across a permanent sand bar.

Casually strolling, we completed the walk within 1 hour and 15 minutes. This included all of our many stops to admire and photograph our surroundings.

The walk features ocean vistas across pristine rock pools alongside gorgeous displays of native plants, and it goes without saying that the island is home to a variety of marine wildlife.

Broulee Island will be loved by anyone, young, old, big or small. I’m the laziest person you’ll ever meet, who runs a mile from any form of physical activity, but even I completed this scenic walk and most importantly, I enjoyed it.

Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, embark on the famous island walk or you’re simply in search of a great location to photograph, Broulee definitely has something to offer you.
