Adelaide – The Highlights
Adelaide, the capital of South Australia is the fifth largest city in Australia. A mere 2 hour flight from Sydney, my home town, landed me in Adelaide for a five day adventure-packed trip. Adelaide airport is close to the heart of the city. It will take you around 20 minutes by taxi, convenient if you do plan on staying in the CBD.
If you’re looking for a city that’s chilled out and laid back in true Aussie style then visiting Adelaide is a must. The city is wonderful without all the hustle and bustle that is commonplace in Sydney and Melbourne. It’s a small city stretching 20 km from the coast to the foothills, so five days is plenty of time to enjoy its hidden treasures.
Here are a few highlights of my trip that I would surely recommend.
1. Royal Botanical Gardens of South Australia
I just love gardens, and these are quite easily the most beautiful gardens I’ve ever been to. Just wander around the grounds and get lost in your thoughts as you you manoeuvre through what seems like a secret garden.
2. Glenelg Beach & Jetty Road
Australia is renowned for its glorious beaches, and Glenelg Beach does not disappoint. Walk along the Jetty and watch locals engrossed in fishing or playing beach cricket on the sand.
3. Mount Lofty
Mount Lofty is the highest point in the southern Mount Lofty Ranges from which you can experience panoramic views of the CBD and the Adelaide plains. Located 15km east of the city centre, it is easily accessible from the city via bus, taking only 20 minutes.
4. Adelaide Hills
Further on from Mount Lofty is the picturesque Adelaide Hills district. A visit to the German town of Hahndorf should definitely be on your list if you’re up for seeing something a little different. German style cottage like shops, cafés and bars will not disappoint.
5. River Torrens
Walk along the scenic River Torrens and you’ll simply want to stop and take in the views, making it the perfect place to enjoy a picnic. If you’re anything like me, you can take on some paddle boating, which costs only $20 for 30 minutes of fun (and exercise) in the water.
6. Rundle Street Mall
And last but not least, a holiday is not complete with a good dose of shopping and that’s exactly what you’ll find on Adelaide’s main drag, Rundle Street Mall.
