Salinger: The bar I was looking for

When I moved back to Mexico City a year and a half ago I settled into a great neighborhood called La Condesa. One of the main reasons why I love this neighbourhood is that it’s one of the very few places in the city where everything you need is in walking distance. The average commute time from home to work in Mexico City is 1 hour and 20 minutes; ask any local and most of them will tell you that the most annoying thing about living here is the time spent in traffic. So you can understand why I feel so lucky to be living in La Condesa, where I can bike to my office and walk pretty much everywhere else.

La Condesa is also a constant reference point if you’re looking for restaurants, bars and nightlife in the city, while still being fairly quiet on weekdays. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays people from around the city gather to eat and drink in the restaurants and bars that are packed into a few blocks surrounding the triple-street intersection of Michoacán, Atlixco and Vincente Suárez.

Since I moved here I have tried tons of places, and there are many restaurants that I love (and will talk about in future posts), but up until recently I hadn’t found a bar that I could call my own. I was constantly searching for that place where I could grab a quick drink after work, or grab a bite when there is nothing in the fridge; a place that felt comfy and familiar. After a year and a half of looking, I think I have finally found it.

Salinger is no more than 350 meters away from home and it is exactly what I’ve been looking for. The decoration is lovely: A low ceiling adorned with hundreds of tiny light bulbs creates a warm, inviting and homey atmosphere.  There are 10 food options on the menu, mainly salads, sandwiches and a beautiful mac & cheese, and a wide array of drinks and cocktails, all cleverly named after J.D Salinger´s famous characters. My personal favorite is the Zooey, a gin and tonic with fresh basil and lime, but everything I have tried is good.

Be sure to drop in at Salinger if you find yourself in Mexico City. You will very likely find me there.
