LAS CHIVAS – IN BIRRIA! Football and food in San Juan de Dios Market

[ENGLISH + ESPAÑOL]

“We invite all the Latinos of the world not just the ones from here!” That’s how you are received when you walk into the smokey birria restaurant at the Mercado Libertad in Guadalajara, Mexico, otherwise known as San Juan de Dios.  “Try this side dish, complements of ‘el Chicharito’!” (el Chicarito, which means ‘the little green pea’, is a famous Mexican football player who once played for the local Guadalajara team “Las Chivas”, and now plays in Manchester).

If you are a fan of football and like to go and watch local games when you travel to different cities, then you’ll probably know that Guadalajara’s team is “Las Chivas” or “the Goats”, and its longstanding rival is Mexico City’s home team “El América”. Being the two teams with the biggest rivalry in the Mexican league, at San Juan de Dios market, this rivalry is apparent not only on the field, but also in the food. Now this is something out of the ordinary that you’ll only find here at the market.

First of all, you might be wondering: what is birria? It’s a traditional dish from the Mexican state of Jalisco that consists of goat meat in a soup containing spices and chilli. It’s excellent for hangovers by the way, and is always served with onion and lime.

Now, the San Juan de Dios market  (on Av Juarez, on the corner it shares with Calzada Independencia) is said to be the biggest in Latin America. I’m not so sure about that, maybe it once was, but nevertheless it is a huge market. On the first floor you’ll find Mexican sweets, watches, ponchos, herbs, etc. On the second floor there’s all kinds of food and on the third floor, electronics and clothes. It’s definitely a place worth visiting if you are in Guadalajara.

But this story is about two restaurants that you’ll find on the second floor whose owners are the biggest fans of these two biggest rivals in the Mexican football league, “Las Chivas” and “El América”. If you visit either of these restaurants, not only will you enjoy a great birria, but you’ll be looked after by devoted fans of the two biggest teams and will enjoy some friendly rivalry. The owners are both very nice and friendly guys, and it’s also a very picturesque place to stop and have a meal if you’re on a photographic expedition. This place surely deserves a whole album to itself on your Facebook, or Pinterest or Instagram, or whatever you’re into.

If you’re a fan of football, and/or local food, a meal here will be a memory to cherish.
